𜵹 is an eight-cell tile with cells 1, 4, and 8 filled. In old text graphics, neighboring tiles joined to draw pixel-like images.

Text symbol

What 𜵹 means

It labels one pattern of filled cells.

“Octant” means a character cell divided into eight parts; “148” names the occupied parts, not a quantity.

How did Kaypro use octant graphics?

It turned text cells into tiny on/off pixels.

A 1983 manual for the Kaypro 10, an early personal computer, shows how its two-column, four-row grid made text graphics. Joining tiles let programs draw larger images; this is semigraphics. Unicode preserves the patterns for old-data compatibility.
