block octant-257

Block Octant-257

𜵆 is a tiny tile for text-mode pictures, filling three of a character cell’s eight parts. Kaypro CP/M machines used octants as pixels. If it looks missing, the text value may still be present.

What 𜵆 means

It fills cells 2, 5, and 7 in a two-column, four-row grid. By 1984, Kaypro CP/M computers used 2-by-4 octants as text-screen pixels; this pattern maps to reverse-video code DE. Unicode keeps these legacy tiles usable for data conversion and emulators. Quadrants and sextants share the mosaic idea, dividing a cell into four or six parts.

Why is it blank on my screen?

Your font may not include this rare glyph. Cascadia Code added all 256 octants in its 2404.03 release in April 2024, making these tiles usable for terminal artwork.

Why does 𜵆 show as a box on some devices?

Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
