What means
The digits mark filled cells in an eight-part tile. Read from the top, left to right by row: 3 and 4 fill the second row; 6 and 8 fill the right-hand cells in the two bottom rows.
How did Kaypro draw on a text screen?
To draw pictures with text cells. Programs combined filled and blank octant tiles to make rough images without controlling each screen dot separately.
A 2021 Unicode proposal maps this tile from Kaypro’s normal set at byte DC. Text converters can map that old byte to the Unicode character. The name “octant” follows “sextant” mosaic blocks, which use two columns and three rows.
Octant cells need even proportions and gap-free edges, or seams split the picture.

Questions people ask
1Why does show as a box on some devices?
It is recent: Unicode added it in version 16.0 (2024), and phones and computers whose fonts are older than that have nothing to draw it with. The character itself is still correct and copies correctly.
