What 🬙 means
Four cells: top-left, top-right, middle-right, and bottom-left. The digits name positions in a two-column, three-row grid.
Ceefax, an early Teletext service from the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC), showed block graphics on a prototype weather map around 1973. In 1976, the BBC, Independent Broadcasting Authority, and British Radio Equipment Manufacturers’ Association defined a 23 grid in their Teletext specification.
TRS-80 home computers used these mosaics in the 1970s and 1980s, joining tiles into small pictures. A 2017 Unicode proposal included the Teletext and TRS-80 tiles to preserve legacy character data. The 1976 Teletext specification allowed cells to touch or have thin background gaps; 🬙 alone carries no page setting.
Questions people ask
1Why does 🬙 show as a box on some devices?
Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
