What 🬗 means
It fills three of six cells in a screen tile. The digits mark them: 1 upper left, 4 middle right, 5 lower left.
The 23 pattern let computers draw pictures in text grids. UK teletext, developed in the early 1970s, used 23 mosaics for TV-page graphics; France's Minitel, a home information service, used similar graphics from the early 1980s. A 2019 Unicode proposal aimed to preserve these legacy patterns for data conversion and emulators.
Why does the separated sextant have gaps?
The spaced look is a separate character. Teletext could show mosaic cells joined or with narrow background gaps. Unicode also has a separate character for the same 1-4-5 pattern with gaps.
Questions people ask
1Why does 🬗 show as a box on some devices?
Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
