What 飢 means
The Taiwan source means high wind; Unicode maps it to “hungry.”
說文解字 defines 飂 as “high wind”: 風 gives its meaning, while 翏 supplies the sound. A 2018 proposal identified 飢 with 飂; Taiwan’s 2019 feedback backed keeping it separate from 飢.
Unicode’s CJK compatibility supplement preserves characters when text moves to CNS 11643-1992 and back. Unicode 18.0 maps 飢 to 飢, but that legacy mapping does not settle its source meaning.

Questions people ask
1Does Unicode normalization keep 飢 distinct?
No. Under Unicode 18.0, NFC, NFD, NFKC, and NFKD all turn it into 飢; that text cleanup can erase the Taiwan source distinction.
