What 者 means
It means the same character as 者: “person” or “one who.”
In Chinese, 者 can refer to a person or thing, make a phrase mean “the one who …,” or mark a pause or judgment. In Korean Hanja compounds, 자 means an agent or person; in Japanese, 者 is read しゃ in compounds and もの for “person” or “one.”
者 appears in late Shang bronze inscriptions and early Western Zhou examples. That history belongs to 者 itself. 者 has a different trail: its source-standard mapping is recorded in KPS 10721-2000.
why is CJK compatibility ideograph FAB2 in Unicode?
It preserves a North Korean source-standard encoding of 者.
UFAB2 is in Unicode’s compatibility range for round-trip conversion with that source standard. The KPS 10721-2000 record maps KP1-69B1 to U8005 者: the separate code point preserves an encoding distinction, not a new everyday meaning.
The undotted top distinguishes this North Korean form from dotted legacy forms such as 者 and 者, associated with Japanese and Taiwan mappings. Fonts draw the strokes, so the dot can vary in display; the encoded characters still differ.
A source-compatibility character; ordinary text uses 者.
NFKC or NFKD can turn 者 into 者, losing exact source identity.

Questions people ask
1Will Unicode normalization change 者?
NFKC and NFKD do: they map it to 者. NFC and NFD preserve 者. Keep the original when your workflow depends on the exact source code point.
