What 訓 means
訓 means teaching; Japanese also uses it as a reading label.
The Eastern Han Shuowen Jiezi, an early Chinese character dictionary, defines 訓 as explaining to teach; its analysis pairs 言 (“speech”) with 川 (“sound”).
Chinese texts also use 訓 for precepts, training, and commentary. Japanese 訓読み gives a Chinese-derived character its native reading; 訓読 reads classical Chinese using Japanese grammar. Korean 訓練 means training; 12th-century Korean 口訣 reading marks show Chinese texts read in Korean.

Questions people ask
1Why does 訓 show as a box on some devices?
Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
