Word and Lyrics Character

It refers to words or lyrics, depending on language and context. In Chinese, 詞/词 can mean a word or expression, and the character also appears in words for lyrics. Japanese uses 詞 for words, song lyrics, and some grammatical terms. Korean also uses it in Hanja compounds—Korean words written with Chinese characters—for word-related and lyric terms.

The early Chinese character dictionary Shuowen Jiezi records the older graph 䛐 and explains the word as an inner intention expressed outward in speech. It links that account to 言 (speech) and 司 (directing). This is a historical gloss, not the full meaning of modern 詞.

Why does 詞 mean both words and lyrics?

Lyrics are words shaped to music. Ci lyrics grew from popular songs, with writers fitting words to irregular melodies. The earliest surviving examples date to the Middle Tang; by the Song period, ci was an established literary form. Literary transmission carried the form to Korea and Japan. The Shuowen Jiezi commentary also distinguishes 詞 from 辭, a broader composition or discourse term.

Which form belongs in my text?

Match the character to the language and script you are writing. Traditional Chinese uses 詞; simplified Chinese uses 词. Japanese uses 詞 in some words and grammar terms, while 辞 appears in other compounds such as 辞書. Fonts can draw strokes differently, but a Chinese input method’s script setting determines whether it offers 詞 or 词.

A Traditional Chinese input method may use Pinyin, sound-based Zhuyin/Bopomofo, or shape-based input such as Cangjie; select the intended candidate. A Japanese input method offers 詞 when it matches the word you are entering.
