Character 詠

15457/20992

詠 is the character for making or voicing a poem — composing, reciting, or singing it. In Chinese and Japanese it lives mostly in literary words for chant and recite, with different readings by language. Sent alone, it is usually a word fragment or name choice, not a mood cue.

What 詠 means

It points to poetry delivered with a sustained voice.

詠 is built from 言, speech, and 永, the sound part that also suggests length. A character-history record shows a bronze-script form around 1000 BCE; a small-seal form is recorded in Shuowen around 100 AD. Its early job was vocal: stretch speech into song, then name both the poem and the act of making it.

How do Chinese and Japanese use 詠?

The poetry stays; the reading and grammar shift.

Mandarin reads it yǒng for singing, chanting, or reciting; Japanese reads エイ in compounds and uses 詠む (yomu) for composing or reciting verse. Japanese dictionaries also preserve a performance sense where dancers recited poetic lines. That shared path belongs to a wider literary transfer: the Man'yoshu, from the Nara period, records Japanese poetry written with Chinese characters before kana.

Is 詠 related to 咏?

咏 is a related written form, not a new meaning.

Variant dictionaries trace 咏 to 詠, and simplified-character tables pair them. The link is historical: the speech mark, written 言 in traditional form or 讠 in simplified form, signals meaning, while 永 supplies the sound. So 永 alone is not interchangeable with 詠, and 咏 in simplified Chinese is not a different emotional reading.

Literary and poetic: established in compounds, but a lone 詠 feels like a word fragment rather than casual chat.

Is 詠 a mood symbol? No — ask for the language or surrounding text.

Questions people ask

1

Why does 詠 show as a box on some devices?

Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
