CJK Unified Ideograph-8DC2

跂 names an extra-toed foot or the act of rising onto your toes; it is not a fixed chat reaction. In classical writing it can extend to eager looking or slow crawling, and it sometimes appears where 企 is used as a textual variant. If someone sends 跂 by itself, ask for the surrounding sentence.

Text symbol

What 跂 means

It describes an extra toe or a raised-heel stance.

《说文解字》 gives the earliest clear written explanation found here: “足多指,” a foot with extra toes, and analyzes the character as 足 plus phonetic 支. The glyph record checked here begins at a small-seal form. As of 2026-09-14, the sources checked here do not establish a single inventor or an earlier recognizable oracle-bone or bronze ancestor.

Later uses stretch from tiptoeing to see farther to slow or winding movement in 跂行 and 跂跂. That is evolution in usage, not a new online symbol.

Why does 跂 sometimes replace 企?

They overlap in the classical tiptoe sense.

The relationship is textual, not a resemblance guess: in this classical use 跂 and 企 can be variant spellings, and witnesses to the Laozi line alternate between 跂者不立 and 企者不立. In both, the image is a person raised onto the toes, unable to stand steadily.

In 《诗经·河广》, 跂予望之 means tiptoeing to see the distant Song state; the same physical action gives the extended sense of eager looking. Do not silently normalize one form to the other in a quotation.

What does 跂 mean in a message?

Read it as a rare character, not an emoji reaction.

A standalone 跂 has no settled chat meaning, so ask for the surrounding sentence or source. Inside a quotation, read the local phrase; the dictionary gloss alone does not reveal why the sender chose it.

Classical or specialist; in modern chat it feels deliberate rather than conversational.

Do not read 跂 as a mood emoji; alone, it has no standard reaction.

Questions people ask

1

Why does 跂 look different in different fonts?

It can. 跂 is a font-rendered CJK character, so stroke proportions vary by typeface; those differences do not create separate emoji meanings.
