Anguilla flag emoji 🇦🇮: how it works and what the flag means

The Anguilla flag emoji is not a single picture in Unicode. It is two regional indicator letters, A and I (Anguilla's ISO country code), which phones and apps draw together as the flag. Most country flags, Anguilla's among them, arrived as emoji in 2015. On a system without flag support (Windows' own emoji font, for example) you see the letters AI instead; the text underneath is the same, so it still shows as a flag on the reader's phone. Those two letters also make an easy pun for artificial intelligence, and they are why the island's internet domain is .ai .

The flag itself, adopted in 1990, is a British Blue Ensign: dark blue with the Union Jack in the corner, as befits a British Overseas Territory , and Anguilla's coat of arms in the fly. The arms show three orange dolphins leaping in a circle on white above a turquoise band. The official reading is that the orange dolphins stand for endurance, unity and strength, their circle for continuity, the white for peace and tranquility, and the turquoise for the sea, faith, youth and hope. There is no orange-dolphin emoji, so people paste next to the flag, or the colours as hearts .

Many Anguillians also fly the older Dolphin Flag: the same three orange dolphins on a plain white field with a turquoise band, adopted in 1967 when the island broke away from rule from St Kitts. It has no emoji of its own; covers both, and comes closest to the white Dolphin Flag.

Anguilla symbols: dolphins, boat racing and Anguilla Day

Sailboat is the most Anguillian emoji after the flag. Boat racing is the national sport: wooden sloops built on the island, with tall sails and no engines, race round courses off Sandy Ground, Meads Bay and other bays while crowds watch from the beach and from boats following the race. The biggest races are on Anguilla Day and during Summer Festival in August, and every village backs its own boat, so and run through feeds all season.

Anguilla Day, 30 May, marks 1967, when Anguillians expelled the police of the St Kitts government and began what the island calls the Anguilla Revolution; is how people mark it. The island had been joined to St Kitts and Nevis in one colony, and after years of argument it became a separate British dependency in 1980. is the nearest emoji to the Zenaida dove, the national bird.

Beaches, sea and island life

Anguilla is a low, flat coral island about 16 miles (26 km) long, and its beaches are why most visitors come: Shoal Bay, Meads Bay, Rendezvous Bay, the cliffs of Little Bay and the sandy cays offshore, Sandy Island and Prickly Pear. and are the most pasted Anguilla emoji after the flag, and , , and cover the turtles that nest on its beaches and the reefs around it.

Most visitors arrive by ferry across the channel from Saint-Martin , or by small plane , often via Sint Maarten , whose airport is a few minutes away by air. On land, are the goats that wander freely across the island, its iguanas, and the dry scrub and cactus of the interior. belongs too: Hurricane Irma, a Category 5 storm, hit Anguilla in September 2017, and is what people post when a storm is coming.

Anguilla food and music emoji

Seafood comes first: for spiny lobster and the smaller crayfish served grilled at beach restaurants, and for the catch of fishing villages such as Island Harbour. Pigeon peas and rice, usually with fish, is often named the national dish: . Roadside barbecue is a weekend habit, and is rum punch. recalls the salt that was raked from the ponds at Sandy Ground and elsewhere and exported until the 1980s.

Summer Festival, Anguilla's carnival, fills the first weeks of August with boat races, calypso and pageant shows, J'ouvert and the parade: .

Worth knowing

  • Anguilla's two-letter code AI gave it the internet domain .ai, and since the AI boom so many companies have registered .ai names that the fees have become one of the island government's largest sources of income.
  • When Britain landed paratroopers and police on Anguilla in March 1969 to end the breakaway, they met no resistance, and the London press nicknamed the episode the "Bay of Piglets".
  • In 1995 a raft of uprooted trees washed up on Anguilla's east coast carrying at least 15 green iguanas, apparently swept from Guadeloupe by hurricanes, more than 200 km away. It became the first documented case of lizards crossing the sea to a new island this way.
  • The island's name is usually traced to the Spanish or Italian word for eel (anguila, anguilla), for its long, narrow shape.
