English and Dutch are both official. English is the everyday language: of the island's roughly 46,000 people (a CLDR estimate) about 31,000 speak it, with about 5,000 speakers of Spanish and about 1,600 of Dutch by the same estimates; Papiamento and French Creole are heard too. English needs no special letters, so the letters on this page are the Dutch ones used in official names and documents: ร รฉ for stress, as in รฉรฉn (one), and the diaeresis in ร รซ and ร รฏ, which shows that a vowel starts a new syllable, as in ideeรซn or beรฏnvloeden.
On Windows, รฉ is Alt + 0233, รซ Alt + 0235 and รฏ Alt + 0239 (capitals ร 0201, ร 0203, ร 0207). On a Mac, press Option + E then the letter for รฉ, and Option + U then the letter for รซ or รฏ. On a phone, hold down e or i to pick the accented form. The full Dutch alphabet is on the Dutch Letters page, and the Spanish one, for the island's Spanish speakers, on Spanish Letters & Accents; the neighbours in the Kingdom have pages of their own under Curaรงao, Aruba and the Netherlands.

14Worth knowing
- Saint Martin is split between two countries, Dutch Sint Maarten and French Saint-Martin , under the Treaty of Concordia of 1648, and the border has stayed open ever since. A local legend says the line was settled by a Frenchman and a Dutchman walking around the island in opposite directions, and the Frenchman got the bigger share.
- According to tradition the island owes its name to Christopher Columbus sighting it on 11 November 1493, the feast of St. Martin of Tours, which is why 11 November is still St. Martin's Day on both sides.
- The Sint Maarten flag and the Philippine flag look alike at emoji size: both have a white triangle at the hoist, but Sint Maarten has red over blue and the Philippines blue over red.
- Before 2010 the island's Dutch side had no flag emoji code of its own: it was part of the Netherlands Antilles, code AN, which was retired when Sint Maarten and Curaรงao became separate countries and Bonaire, Sint Eustatius and Saba became Caribbean Netherlands.
