Morocco emoji meanings: 🇲🇦 🦁 👑 ⵣ

the Moroccan flag is the emoji Moroccans reach for first: for a match, a national day, a holiday photo or simply to say where you are from. Its red field and green star make the colour pair of Morocco. The star is not a plain one: it is an interlaced green pentagram, the Seal of Solomon, which you can also copy as . Red is the old colour of the ruling dynasty, and its five points are often read today as the five pillars of Islam.

Lion is the Atlas or Barbary lion, the animal on the royal coat of arms and the nickname of the football team, the Atlas Lions (أسود الأطلس). Crown stands for the monarchy and above all for Throne Day on 30 July. Neither has a Morocco-specific emoji, so and next to do the job.

ⵣ is not an emoji but a letter: yaz, the Tifinagh letter Z, which stands for the Amazigh (Berber) people and sits in red in the middle of the blue, green and yellow Amazigh flag. In the Souss, the Atlas and the Rif, and among Amazigh Moroccans abroad, it is the identity sign pasted into names, bios and posts. , the hand-shaped charm called khamsa or khmissa, is a familiar sign of protection on doors, necklaces and car mirrors.

Morocco flag emoji: copy and paste , and why Windows shows MA

The Morocco flag emoji is not a picture stored as one character. It is two regional indicator letters, and , the country code MA, which phones and Macs draw as the flag. Windows has no country flag pictures in its emoji font, so on a Windows PC the same emoji appears as the letters MA; copy it anyway, the person on a phone sees the flag. On Discord you can type :flag_ma:.

The flag itself dates from 1915, when the green star was added to the plain red banner Morocco had flown before. The Arabic name of the country, المغرب (al-Maghrib), means the west, the land where the sun sets, which is why sometimes stands in for it. For the neighbours see our Algeria, Western Sahara, Mauritania and Spain collections, and every other country in Flag Emoji.

Moroccan symbols: Arabic letters, Tifinagh ⵣ and the dirham symbol د.م.

Morocco has two official languages, Arabic and Tamazight, and bilingual signage is being rolled out on public buildings: المملكة المغربية in Arabic and ⵜⴰⴳⵍⴷⵉⵜ ⵏ ⵍⵎⵖⵔⵉⴱ (Tageldit n Lmeghrib) in Tifinagh. Formal writing uses Modern Standard Arabic, but what people speak is Darija, Moroccan Arabic, used by roughly 32 million people in CLDR's estimate. Online, Darija is often typed in Latin letters with digits for the sounds Latin lacks: 3 for ع, 7 for ح and, very Moroccan, 9 for ق. In Arabic script, the hard g of Darija and of Amazigh names is written ڭ or its look-alike ݣ, a kaf with three dots.

Tifinagh is the ancient Amazigh script in its modern standard form, set by IRCAM, the Royal Institute of Amazigh Culture, and adopted for Tamazight in 2003; Tamazight became an official language in the 2011 constitution, and Tifinagh entered Unicode in version 4.1 (2005). It is written left to right; ⴰⵣⵓⵍ (azul) means hello. The spoken Amazigh languages of Morocco have collections of their own: Tachelhit in the Souss and the Anti-Atlas, Central Atlas Tamazight, and Riffian in the north, alongside Standard Moroccan Tamazight. To type Tifinagh on Windows, add a Tifinagh keyboard, listed under Tamazight in the language settings; in Word you can also type 2D63 and press Alt X for ⵣ. Phone keyboards such as Gboard offer Tamazight layouts, or copy the letters from this page.

The Moroccan dirham symbol does not exist in Unicode as a single character. Price tags say DH (as in 20 DH), Arabic text writes د.م., dal and mim, short for درهم مغربي, and banks use the code MAD. A dirham has 100 centimes, and in conversation many Moroccans still count in older units: rials, twenty to the dirham, and big sums in centimes, so a car for one million usually costs 10,000 DH. French, spoken by about 13 million Moroccans by CLDR's estimate, is everywhere in business and on shop signs; see the French, Arabic and Moroccan Arabic collections for their letters.
