Oman flag emoji 🇴🇲: copy and paste, meaning and colours
the Oman flag emoji has a red vertical band at the pole and three horizontal bands on the rest, white at the top, red in the middle and green at the bottom, so the red forms a sideways T. In the top corner of the red band sits the national emblem in white: a khanjar, the curved Omani dagger, in its sheath over two crossed swords. Like every country flag emoji it is not a picture stored in Unicode but two regional indicator symbols, and , for Oman's country code OM, which phones and Macs join into the flag. Windows has no flag pictures in its emoji font, so there you see the letters OM, while the person you send them to still sees the flag on their phone.
The flag was adopted in 1970, when Sultan Qaboos came to power; before that Oman flew a plain red flag. The colours are usually explained as white for peace, red for the battles fought against invaders, and green for the fertile land of the mountains. Where flag emoji don't show, people write the flag in its colours, , or .
and stand for the khanjar and swords of the emblem, which Omani men still wear at the waist with the white dishdasha on formal days, and for the sultanate: Oman is ruled by a sultan, Sultan Haitham since 2020. Oman's official 2025 estimate put its population at about 5.36 million, on the southeast corner of the Arabian Peninsula between the United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia, Yemen and the Arabian Sea.
Omani rial symbol: RO, OMR and ر.ع.
The Omani rial has no currency sign of its own in Unicode, so there is nothing to type from a font: prices are written RO or R.O. in English (RO 3.500), OMR in banking, and ر.ع. in Arabic, short for ريال عماني (Omani rial): ra, a full stop, ayn and a full stop. To write it, copy ر and ع from the grid and add the full stops; because Arabic runs right to left, ر ends up on the right.
A rial is divided into 1,000 baisa , so prices often have three decimals: RO 1.250 is one rial and 250 baisa. The rial is pegged to the US dollar at about 2.60 dollars to the rial, which makes it the third most valuable currency unit in the world after the Kuwaiti and Bahraini dinars. and are the money emoji people put next to it.
Arabic letters and numbers for Oman
Arabic is Oman's official language and, by CLDR's estimate, the language of roughly 3.2 million of its people. Omanis speak their own Omani Arabic at home but write Modern Standard Arabic in the Arabic script: 28 letters, written right to left, with most letters joining and taking different shapes according to their position. The grid groups the letters by shape: ب ت ث share one body and differ only in their dots, and so do ج ح خ, د ذ, ر ز, س ش, ص ض, ط ظ and ع غ. Hamza ء marks a glottal stop, a brief catch in the throat; ة (ta marbuta) ends most feminine words, and ى (alif maqsura) ends words like على. Oman in Arabic is عمان, ayn, mim, alif, nun; written with a vowel mark it is عُمان, and the Sultanate of Oman is سلطنة عمان.
To type Arabic on Windows, add the Arabic keyboard under Settings › Time & language › Language & region and switch with WindowsSpace; on a Mac add Arabic under System Settings › Keyboard › Input Sources; on iPhone and Android add an Arabic keyboard and switch with the globe key. Arabic punctuation is turned to suit the script: the comma ، is upside down, the question mark ؟ is mirrored, and the semicolon is ؛. Eastern Arabic digits ٠١٢٣٤٥٦٧٨٩ are common in Arabic text and on banknotes, and even inside right-to-left text a number is written largest place first, left to right: ١٨ is 18.
For the full alphabet with its vowel marks see the Arabic collection. Oman has long been a meeting point of the Indian Ocean: Baluchi is spoken by an estimated 190,000 people, mostly along the Batinah coast and in Muscat, and Persian by around 37,000; both are written in the Arabic script with a few extra letters such as پ and چ, and both have their own collections. In Dhofar and the far south people also speak Mehri and Jibbali, Modern South Arabian languages that are rarely written, and in the Musandam mountains a small community speaks Kumzari.
