Cyrillic Small Letter Short U

95/256

ў is the Belarusian short u, a quick glide like the w in English. In a word it marks Belarusian spelling; alone, it is just a letter. The Cyrillic form was in Belarusian use by 1870, after earlier experiments with Latin and Cyrillic forms.

What ў means

It marks a short, non-syllabic u, like English w. In Belarusian, it follows a vowel where у would be a full vowel: compare любоў with любові. It can also begin a word after a word ending in a vowel, as in я ўвайшоў. The Belarusian short u marks pronunciation and spelling.

There was no single neat moment of invention. A recorded prototype appears in 1845; a Belarusian publication used ú in 1846, and Belarusian books used Latin ŭ in 1853–1854. The Cyrillic form appears in Belarusian use by 1870, and a 1874 collection of Belarusian folk songs uses it consistently.

A separate Lithuanian Cyrillic project used ў for parts of diphthongs in 1864. That is a parallel use, not evidence of borrowing. The letter remained central to Belarusian spelling, while the Lithuanian Cyrillic project did not become lasting usage.

Why does ў stand out in a message?

It signals Belarusian writing before it signals a mood. In a Belarusian word, it can mark both the language and its cultural setting. A monument to the letter in Polotsk, erected in 2003, presents it as a cultural emblem.

The political reading depends on context. Research on Belarusian protest texts from 2020 describes the language as a social symbol of protest. Someone familiar with that history may read a word containing ў as cultural or oppositional alignment; that is an inference from the context, not a fixed meaning of the letter.

If someone sends ў alone, read it as an isolated letter. The surrounding text is needed to tell whether the message carries any social or political meaning.

How do I type ў?

In Belarusian spelling, ў usually follows a vowel; у usually follows a consonant or punctuation. The rule also applies at the start of a word after a word ending in a vowel. Ordinary у is used before a non-iotated vowel and in specified exceptions.

On Windows in 2026, the standard Belarusian keyboard layout has a dedicated ў key, with Ў on Shift. The glyph is drawn by the active text font.

Ordinary in Belarusian writing; distinctive elsewhere as a marker of Belarusian language and culture.

The breve is part of the letter: Belarusian spelling distinguishes ў from у by position.

Why does ў show as a box on some devices?

Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
