What ๐ง means
They are signing the word โdeafโ in American Sign Language. In ASL the sign starts with the index finger touching the cheek near the ear and ends near the corner of the mouth (or the other way round). The emoji freezes that movement into one picture, which is why the person looks as if they are pointing at their ear. All 18 forms (six skin tones, plus man and woman variants) show the same sign and mean the same thing.
Sign languages are full languages with their own grammar and vocabulary, and they differ from country to country: there is no single worldwide sign for โdeafโ. British Sign Language, for example, signs it with two fingers at the ear, and many other sign languages have their own forms. So ๐ง shows the American sign, but readers everywhere understand it as โa deaf personโ.
The emoji came from Apple's 2018 proposal for a set of accessibility emoji, drawn up with disability organizations including the National Association of the Deaf. The same set brought ear with hearing aid, and wheelchairs, and prosthetic limbs, the white cane and the guide dog. Before 2019 there was simply no emoji for deaf people.
What does ๐ง mean when someone sends it?
Usually: โI am deaf or hard of hearing,โ or โthis is about deaf people.โ In a bio or an introduction it is a quick self-description; in a post it flags Deaf culture, sign language, interpreters, captions or accessibility. Many deaf people write โDeafโ with a capital D to mean a cultural and linguistic community whose first language is a sign language, and โdeafโ with a small d for the hearing condition itself. The emoji covers both; the words around it tell you which. It does not tell you whether someone speaks, lip-reads, signs or wears a hearing aid, and it is not a hint that they are helpless or sad. If you want to describe someone else, โdeafโ or โhard of hearingโ is the wording deaf organizations prefer; โhearing impairedโ is widely disliked.
The meme meaning is the one most hearing teenagers know. Mewing is a jaw-posture fad (pressing the tongue to the roof of the mouth, supposedly for a sharper jawline). From 2024 a joke spread in which someone asked a question gets in reply: โshh, can't talk, I'm mewing,โ often with a finger traced along the jaw. In that use the deaf man emoji is a prop for silence and a jawline, not a comment on hearing. Context makes the difference: a jawline selfie, and a dodged question mean the meme; anything about hearing, signing or identity means the plain reading.
Neutral and respectful when it describes deaf people; playful in the mewing meme, which Deaf readers may find tiresome rather than offensive.
Using it to call someone stupid or stubborn for โnot hearingโ makes deafness the insult.
Drift: Designed in 2019 as an accessibility emoji, picked up a second life in 2024 as the mewing meme, which for many younger users is now its first meaning. (as of 2026)

4Worth knowing
- Before Emoji 12.0 in 2019 there was no emoji for a deaf person at all; the whole accessibility set, from the white cane to the wheelchairs, arrived in one release after Apple's proposal.
- The ASL sign in the picture is the same whether the finger starts at the ear or the mouth, so the still image works both ways.
Questions people ask
4Is the deaf person emoji offensive?
No. It was created with deaf organizations to represent deaf people, and deaf people use it for themselves. It becomes offensive only when deafness is the joke, as in mocking someone for not listening.
Why does the mewing emoji show a deaf person?
Because the meme needed a face that is pointing at its ear or jaw while saying nothing, and fit, with for โshhโ. The borrowing is a coincidence of shape, not a comment on deaf people.
Does ๐ง mean deaf in every country?
As an emoji, yes. As a gesture, no: it reproduces the American Sign Language sign, and other sign languages, such as British Sign Language, sign โdeafโ differently.
Should I write Deaf or deaf?
Both are correct in different senses. Capital-D Deaf names a cultural community that uses sign language; small-d deaf describes hearing. When unsure about a person, ask them or use โdeaf or hard of hearingโ.
