What ⯰ means
It labels Eris in astrology and recalls the goddess in Discordianism. In a chart, the hand marks the dwarf planet; in Discordian writing, it points back to Eris and the tradition built around her.
The Five-Fingered Hand of Eris appears in Principia Discordia, a book central to Discordianism, a satirical religion centered on Eris. The hand predates the dwarf planet’s discovery in 2005. When Eris was named, Discordians proposed the hand for the planet, and astrologers later used it in charts.
Why is the Eris hand upright in astrology?
Astrological versions turn the hand upright; Discordian depictions are often horizontal. Discordian versions have no fixed orientation. An early astrological design added a crossbar resembling two crescent-shaped Greek epsilon forms back to back; later versions dropped the bar. Orientation is a clue to context, not a rule.
When did Unicode approve the Eris glyph?
Unicode’s committee agreed to encode it in 2016. The decision covered both Eris forms and a separate Sedna sign in the same proposal, which described them as symbols used by some astrologers. Their inclusion records encoding approval; it does not make them routine astronomical notation.
Specialist and tradition-bound: astrological notation in a chart, Discordian reference elsewhere.
In a chart, this names Eris; it does not mean chaos by itself.
