What ⶍ means
It spells a syllable in Me’en. The Ethiopic script writes several languages in Ethiopia and Eritrea. Me’en is one of them, and ⶍ belongs inside a written word. Its extended signs serve languages whose spelling needs syllables missing from the basic set. A 2004 Unicode proposal called such additions necessary for spellings then used in Ethiopia and Eritrea.
The script’s precursors appear in pre-Aksumite graffiti and ancient South Arabian inscriptions. The first fully formed Ethiopic consonant-and-vowel writing system appears in the mid-fourth-century Ezana inscriptions. Ge’ez, a classical language tied to the script, is now used mainly in worship; adapted Ethiopic forms write modern languages.
How do I type ⶍ?
Use an extended Ethiopic layout or Unicode entry.
The GFF Blin Typing Manual 1.0 keeps non-Blin Ethiopic letters off its main layout and puts them on a separate Unicode keyboard. A keyboard for another language may handle extended Ethiopic syllables differently, so check its coverage.
Will ⶍ look the same in every font?
No; its outline can change with the font. The Unicode 18.0 chart says its sample glyphs are not prescriptive, so an Ethiopic Extended font may draw ⶍ differently from another font. The outline changes, not the character.
A specialist writing-system character: its reading belongs to the language and word being written.
If someone sends ⶍ alone, ask what word or language it came from before translating.
Drift: The 2025 Unicode identifier review proposed classifying ⶍ as Uncommon_Use because it was not in documented common use. That standards finding does not show that a Me’en spelling system has abandoned the character.

1Why does ⶍ appear as a square?
Missing font coverage. Abyssinica SIL 2.300 supports the Ethiopic Extended block; a font without that range may show a missing-character box for ⶍ. The text still contains the syllable.

A visible symbol can contain several code points. JS .length counts UTF-16 units; UTF-8 counts bytes.
