What ጌ means

It is one Ethiopic syllable; in Amharic, it sounds like “ge.”

Ethiopic writing serves several languages, and ጌ’s reading follows the word it belongs to.

A South Arabian-derived writing tradition is attested in Ethiopia and Eritrea in the 8th/7th centuries BCE. The Ethiopic writing system used for Ge’ez, an older language, appears between the 1st and 3rd centuries CE. A 4th-century CE reform added vowel marks, creating syllable forms. The script later served Amharic, Tigrinya and other languages, while Ge’ez became chiefly liturgical.
