What ᎏ means
Use an Ethiopic keyboard or an Ethiopic Unicode input method.
On the SIL Ethiopic keyboard map, type p, then uppercase U; that sequence produces ᎏ. Other layouts can assign a different shortcut, so use an Ethiopic Unicode input method or character picker when this map is unavailable. A keyboard can insert ᎏ even when the current font cannot show it. Older Ethiopic font workflows sometimes encoded an extended syllable as a base sign plus a separate mark, so similar-looking text can have different underlying characters.
What does ᎏ mean?
It is a Gurage syllable sign in an extended p-series.
ᎏ belongs to an extended Gurage spelling family. It is a labialized p form: the p sound is made with the lips rounded. An isolated ᎏ gives no clue to its word or sentence, so its meaning depends on the surrounding text.
It sits in the extended p-series alongside ᎌ, ᎍ, and ᎎ, but those are distinct syllable signs, not alternate font shapes for ᎏ.
Where does ᎏ come from?
The p-series extension first appears in print in a 1966 Chaha book.
At linguist Wolf Leslau's request for a research corpus, writer Sahle Selassie Berhane Mariam prepared Gurage village stories and devised extra Ethiopic letters for sounds the existing set could not represent. The Chaha volume brought those additions into print.
A separate spelling developed by missionary Carolyn Ford and translator Degefe Gebremariam also used the series. A 2021 review says modern Gurage spelling retains ᎏ and ᎌ but treats ᎍ and ᎎ as historical forms; older references call the legacy spelling “Sebatbeit.”
A written syllable from Gurage orthography; it belongs inside text, not as a casual reaction.
Alone, it gives no reliable cue about the sender's mood; ask what word it came from.

1Why does ᎏ show as a box on some devices?
Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
