What ๐ง means
A child, with no boy or girl specified. The picture is a kid's face, roughly school age, with simple medium-length hair and none of the cues that usually mark (short hair, often a cap) or (longer hair, often a bow). It stands for a child in general: your kid, someone's kid, children as a group.
It arrived in 2017 together with person and older person, a small set made so you could mention a human without picking a gender. Until then the only kid faces were and . Unicode describes these as gender-unspecified, not as emoji for non-binary people, so sending ๐ง says nothing about a child's identity; it just doesn't mention it.
Everyday uses: parenting chat ("๐ง finally asleep"), school and clubs, "kids welcome" or "kids' menu" notices, nostalgia about childhood, and a playful "I'm such a ๐ง" when you've done something silly. Skin tones apply to it like any face emoji.
What does it mean when someone sends ๐ง?
Usually they are talking about a real child. People often pick ๐ง because it is the plain kid face, or because the child's gender doesn't matter to the message: "brought the ๐ง to the dentist", "class of 25 ๐ง". The emoji itself carries no hidden tone; it's as neutral as writing the word "kid".
Occasionally it's about the sender: paired with an admission of silliness or excitement, it means "I'm acting like a kid right now", fond rather than critical. Reading anything about gender into the choice is usually a mistake.
Why does ๐ง appear in those grey family emoji?
Since Emoji 15.1 it is the child in gender-neutral families. Sequences like (two adults and a child) and (one adult and a child) are built from and ๐ง joined invisibly. As of 2026, many phones show these as grey silhouettes rather than coloured figures, following Unicode's advice to keep family pictures generic. If a family emoji someone sent looks like shadows, that's why, not a broken font. On an older device it may instead fall apart into separate faces.
Neutral and warm; fine anywhere from a family group chat to a work message about childcare.
Treating ๐ง as a statement about a child's gender identity: it only leaves gender unsaid.

Questions people ask
2Is ๐ง the non-binary child emoji?
No. It is a child with gender left unsaid, like the word "kid". Unicode designed it as the default rather than as an identity marker, so you can use it for any child.
How old is the child in ๐ง?
No set age. It sits between baby and adult, so think roughly school age; people use it for anyone from a toddler to a tween.
