What 끌 means

Alone, 끌 means “chisel”; in related verbs, it can mean “pull.” As a noun, 끌 names a metal tool for cutting or shaping wood. In 끌다, the sense can broaden to pulling or dragging something, driving a vehicle, attracting attention, leading something along, delaying a matter, or prolonging a sound. 끌리다 can mean being dragged or feeling drawn to someone or something. The full Korean word determines the sense.

Archaeology records iron chisels in tombs from the Korean Three Kingdoms period, including examples dated to the 5th–6th centuries. An older spelling, ᄭᅳᆯ, names the same tool. Hangul, the Korean alphabet, was created in 1443 and introduced in 1446 in Hunminjeongeum, a book explaining the script. In writing, 끌 is a Hangul block made from an initial consonant, a vowel, and a final consonant.

How do you type 끌?

Use Korean input: ShiftR, then M, then F. On the standard Korean 2-beolsik layout, which assigns Hangul letters to a QWERTY keyboard, those keys enter ㄲ, ㅡ, and ㄹ; the input method composes them into 끌.

Unicode normalization, which makes equivalent text sequences consistent, can split a precomposed syllable into underlying Hangul letters (jamo) or join them again. If software shows separate letters, it is showing the same syllable's encoded parts, not a new meaning.

Neutral Korean writing: a tool name alone, with broader literal and figurative senses inside verbs.

Alone, 끌 can mean “chisel”; “pull” is not its only reading.

Questions people ask

1

Why does 끌 look separated?

It can happen: a Korean input method may leave the Hangul letters uncomposed instead of making one syllable block. Re-entering them with Korean composition active usually joins them; Unicode normalization can also recombine the underlying letters.
