What ➸ means
The feathered tail makes this pointer look ornamental and emphatic. In a 1737 hydraulic treatise, Bernard Forest de Bélidor used an archer-like arrow to show water flow and waterwheel rotation. By the nineteenth century, arrow designs increasingly shed feathered tails as direction became the main information.
Unicode’s Dingbats collection draws largely on ITC Zapf Dingbats Series 100, a commercial symbol-font set. ➸ belongs to this ornamental arrow collection, with the feathering built into its designed form.
Its register is decorative, not neutral.
A plain arrow preserves direction but drops the feathered design.

3Questions people ask
1Will ➸ look identical in every font?
No. The font used to render the text supplies the drawing, so the feathering and stroke weight can vary. The character itself remains ➸.
