What 🦘 means
A kangaroo, and by extension anything Australian.
A kangaroo is a marsupial: the mother carries her baby, called a joey, in a pouch on her belly for months after birth. Kangaroos move by hopping on powerful hind legs and use a thick tail for balance; the red kangaroo is the largest living marsupial. They live wild across much of Australia, and tree kangaroos also climb in the rainforests of New Guinea and far north Queensland. In many rural areas of Australia they are a familiar sight, often grazing at dusk by roadsides. Australians shorten the name to "roo", and sometimes "kanga".
Because it is so closely tied to Australia, the kangaroo became the country's unofficial mascot. It stands beside the emu on the national coat of arms, it is the logo of Qantas, the national airline, and it names the country's sports teams: the Kangaroos in rugby league and the Socceroos in football. So in a message, 🦘 often means Australia as a place or an identity rather than the animal in front of someone.
What does it mean when someone sends 🦘?
Often a trip, a wildlife photo or an Australian cheer.
Look at what sits next to it. With a photo, it is the animal. With flight details, dates or a job offer, it means Australia. During a match, an Australian is probably cheering their team. Standing alone from an Australian friend, it may simply be a wink about where they are from, and a reply with or a question about their day lands fine. There is no widely known coded or rude reading to worry about.
Light and friendly; the emoji carries no widely known rude or coded meaning.
Aimed at a person it usually just means Australian; any mockery would come from the words around it.

6Worth knowing
- The word comes from gangurru in Guugu Yimithirr, an Aboriginal language, recorded by members of Captain Cook's expedition in 1770. The popular story that it means "I don't know" is a myth.
- Australia's coat of arms shows a kangaroo and an emu. Folklore says they were chosen because neither animal can walk backwards, so the nation only moves forward; charming, but not the recorded reason.
Questions people ask
3Can 🦘 replace the Australian flag?
Informally, yes. A kangaroo reads clearly as Australia and works as a playful nod. Use when you mean the flag or the country officially.
Is the kangaroo emoji ever an insult?
Not on its own. The words around it decide: Australians joke that someone with "kangaroos in the top paddock" is a bit mad, and 🦘 can echo that.
Is there a wallaby or joey emoji?
No. People use 🦘 loosely for wallabies (smaller cousins) and for joeys too.
