khitan small script character-18baf

Khitan Small Script Character 18BAF

𘮯 is read in a scholarly reconstruction as Khitan <i>il</i>, meaning “state” or “empire.” The phrase <i>il üwe</i> has also been interpreted as “counselor of the empire,” though it may be a personal name. The character’s code-based Unicode name is an identifier, not its historical reading.

What 𘮯 means

Traditional date: about 925; a 2026 study disputes it. Traditional histories credit Yelü Diela, brother of the Liao founder, and say Uyghur writing inspired the script. The study argues it was formalized and spread later under Emperor Shengzong; securely dated surviving examples begin in the 11th century.

Khitan Small Script wrote Khitan alongside the separate Khitan Large Script and Chinese. The surviving record includes inscriptions in nobles’ tombs. It remained in use under Jin rule until a ban in 1191; Jurchen scripts later drew on Khitan models. Phonetic signs formed compact blocks that spell whole words, arranged in vertical columns.
