What 𘮷 means
Read this Khitan glyph with the word around it. A 2010 Unicode proposal labels it “Unknown-74.” Some signs stand for whole words; others spell sounds in groups, so this glyph needs its inscription.
Traditional accounts credit Yelü Diela with creating it in 924 or 925, reportedly inspired by Uyghur writing; the forms look little alike. Khitan Small and Large Scripts coexisted. Earlier lists start surviving inscriptions in 1053; Kang Junyoung’s 2026 study calls a 1051 tomb text the earliest securely dated and argues for later standardization under Liao ruler Shengzong. Khitan writing borrowed Chinese character structure; Jurchen scripts later adapted Khitan models.

Questions people ask
1Why does 𘮷 show as a box on some devices?
It is recent: Unicode added it in version 13.0 (2020), and phones and computers whose fonts are older than that have nothing to draw it with. The character itself is still correct and copies correctly.
