khitan small script character-18be2

Khitan Small Script Character 18BE2

𘯢 is a Khitan Small Script sign with no reliable standalone English gloss; its value depends on its surrounding text. Khitan writing combines signs for words and sounds, and the script remains only partly deciphered. On a modern device, the glyph is useful for studying inscriptions or checking font support, not as a one-character reply.

What 𘯢 means

There is no reliable standalone English gloss for it. Khitan Small Script wrote the Khitan language, spoken by the Khitan people of northern China. Its signs can stand for words or sounds; two to eight sound-signs often join to spell one word. Because the script is only partly deciphered, 𘯢's role cannot be settled from this isolated sign.

The small script was created around 925 CE by Yelü Diela. Its design is said to have been inspired by the Uyghur script, though few similarities remain. The Khitans also used a separate large script for the same language.

Most surviving small-script writing comes from funerary epitaphs—inscriptions carved on stone memorials and buried with Khitan royalty and aristocrats. It also appears on monuments, bronze mirrors, tallies, non-circulation coins, and one jade cup. A Liao-period inscription contains 𘯢 by 1026; a Jin order abolished both Khitan scripts in 1191. Later Jurchen scripts were modeled on Khitan writing.

Why can Khitan text look broken on screen?

A font without glyph or layout support can hide or misplace it. A font lacking 𘯢 may show a blank or missing-glyph box. Even when the sign has a shape, text software still needs Khitan layout rules to arrange sound-sign clusters and vertical columns. A failed display changes the rendering, not the historical sign.

Historical and specialist; by itself, it works best as a sample of Khitan writing.

Alone, it will not reliably communicate a word.
