Khitan Small Script Character

𘱿 is a character in Khitan small script, a system for writing the Khitan language. Liao and Jin records used the script; its traditional creation date is disputed.

Khitan small script has signs for whole words and signs for sounds. Sound signs usually cluster in groups of two to eight to form a word; one glyph might stand for a word or be part of such a cluster.

When was Khitan small script used?

It served Khitan writing into the Jin period.

Tradition dates its creation to about 925, crediting Yelü Diela, the Khitan emperor's brother, and inspiration from Uyghur writing. A 2026 study disputes that date: the earliest securely dated survivor is a 1051 epitaph, and it argues the script was systematized later.

The Liao used the large and small Khitan scripts alongside Chinese; Khitan writing continued under Jin until a 1191 ban. Jurchen scripts later followed the Khitan model.

Why does 𘱿 show as a box on some devices?

It is recent: Unicode added it in version 13.0 (2020), and phones and computers whose fonts are older than that have nothing to draw it with. The character itself is still correct and copies correctly.
