What 𘱾 means
Its reading depends on the surrounding inscription.
Khitan small script mixes word signs (logograms) and sound signs (phonograms); most words use phonetic clusters. The outline alone does not tell you the sign's role.
Why did Khitan scribes use it?
It was one way to write Khitan.
Tradition dates it to around 925 and credits Yelü Diela. A 2026 study argues standardization came under Emperor Shengzong; the oldest securely dated surviving text, a tomb inscription, dates to 1051. Accounts link its design to Uyghur writing, while its block forms reflect regional Chinese-character traditions. Khitan small-script texts survive chiefly on aristocratic epitaphs and monuments. Jin authorities ended official use in 1191; Jurchen writing later followed Khitan models.

Questions people ask
1Why does 𘱾 show as a box?
A missing box usually means the active font lacks this character. Cluster-aware layout also needs shaping support; without it, marks may appear in a line instead of a block.
