What means
It acts as one tile in a set that draws enlarged letters.
In the 1970s, HP's 2620 and 2640 terminals used an optional “Large Character Set” of letter fragments. Software joined them in a 33 grid for headlines while keeping the regular text cells. HP references show this set alongside mathematical characters.
FIGlet is a program for printing terminal banners; a FIGlet banner font can build large letters from these Unicode pieces.
Why can show up as a box?
The active font may not contain a drawing for it.
A missing character may appear as a box or fallback mark. Fonts that include it can still draw it differently; the exact shape depends on the font.

Questions people ask
1Why does show as a box on some devices?
Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
