leftwards dashed arrow

Leftwards Dashed Arrow

⇠ is a leftwards dashed arrow: it points left, while the dashes distinguish its line style; any extra meaning comes from the diagram or sentence around it. A 1737 book about water-powered structures used arrows for water flow and a waterwheel's rotation; arrow forms grew more abstract by the late nineteenth century. In mathematics, arrow notation for limits—the values expressions approach—spread through books published in 1908.

What ⇠ means

The dashes alter the line, not the direction. A diagram may assign dashed lines a convention of its own, so read ⇠ within the notation around it.

Why does ⇠ show as a box on some devices?

Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
