What 𛋄 means
It records a syllable, not one fixed word.
Here, hou33 is a Latin-letter reading of Jiangyong's local Chinese speech, not Mandarin pinyin. Nüshu signs represent syllables; surrounding words show which same-sounding word is meant.
How did women use Nüshu?
Women used it for songs, letters among close women friends, personal accounts, and wedding gift books; it let them record local speech when many could not write Chinese characters.
An early surviving inscription is on a coin from the Taiping Heavenly Kingdom, a rebel state in China (1851–64), saying women are one family. Early 1930s records describe Nüshu; by 2025, preservation and teaching also framed it as endangered heritage.

Questions people ask
1Why does 𛋄 show as a box on some devices?
Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
