Vertical Right Curly Bracket

9/32

︸ is the closing curly brace for a grouped span in vertical East Asian text. Pair it with ︷; the wider Japanese 波括弧 family marks emphasis in headings and sometimes mathematics. Compatibility normalization can turn it into ordinary }.

Text symbol

What ︸ means

It marks the end of a curly-bracketed span in vertical writing.

Pair ︸ with ︷ to enclose text in vertical East Asian lines. In Japanese, the wider curly-bracket family, 波括弧, marks emphasis in headings and sometimes mathematics; ordinary quotation uses 「」.

Japanese bracket marks appeared in print around the late 19th century, including in Dutch–Japanese translation books. This vertical form preserves a layout variant for legacy East Asian text; it adds no new conversational meaning.

Why does ︸ turn into }?

NFKC or NFKD turns it into the ordinary }.

These compatibility normalization steps remove its vertical-form identity, so a round trip through either one cannot preserve ︸ exactly. Unicode's chart also cross-references ⏟, the bottom curly bracket that runs beneath a horizontal mathematical expression.

For new horizontal text, use } and let the layout handle vertical orientation. In web pages, some transformed glyphs need font alternates, so browser support can affect their appearance (as of 2026).

Is ︸ safe to use in programming?

Use } in ordinary programming syntax.

Programming syntax normally uses the ordinary } as a closing delimiter. Because ︸ is a distinct character, it may leave a block unclosed; keep it only when a source or data format explicitly calls for this vertical form.

Specialist typesetting punctuation; one Japanese translator's style guide advises against adding braces unless preserving the source format.

In ordinary code, ︸ may not close a block that expects }.
