fullwidth right curly bracket

Fullwidth Right Curly Bracket

To type } with a Japanese input method (IME), switch to full-width (zenkaku) input and use the right-brace key; the key mapping varies by layout. It closes {…}, a full-cell punctuation pair designed for mixed-width text and legacy encoding compatibility. In code or exact ASCII matching, use } unless the format expects }; compatibility normalization can convert it to }.

What } means

Use a full-width (zenkaku) Japanese input mode, then the right-brace key.

The IME's width setting and physical keyboard layout determine what the brace key produces. Some Japanese keyboard layouts place fullwidth curly brackets on a secondary key layer; other IMEs may offer them among punctuation candidates, so the shortcut varies.

In 1978, Japan's JIS C 6226 standard organized Japanese computer characters, marking a computing milestone for this fullwidth lineage. That standardization point does not prove the individual brace was invented then. The width variant let two-cell CJK text coexist with one-cell ASCII punctuation in mixed-width encodings.

Is } a different kind of brace?

No. It closes the same kind of curly-bracket span.

The fullwidth pair {…} is called nami-kakko (“wave brackets”) in Japanese. Japanese text commonly marks quotations with corner brackets such as 「」, so this pair serves as a delimiter instead. In vertical text, bracket glyphs may rotate or adjust their spacing; the width form changes layout, not the bracket's job.

Fullwidth describes a layout cell, not a fixed pixel width: the font and layout engine draw the shape. Its apparent spacing can vary across fonts while the character remains }.

When should I use } instead of }?

Use } only when the format expects full-width punctuation.

If no width-specific rule applies, use ASCII } for code and exact ASCII matching. Compatibility normalization (NFKC) and CLDR's Latin-ASCII transform map } to }; without that processing, software can still distinguish the two.

Technical punctuation: it marks a full-width layout choice.

Use } for code or exact ASCII matching unless the format requires }.

Questions people ask

1

Why does } show as a box on some devices?

Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
