saurashtra letter cha

Saurashtra Letter Cha

ꢘ is the Saurashtra letter “cha” — an aspirated “ch,” not an emoji. Sent alone it usually means a letter sample, a lesson, or a font test. The twist: Saurashtra is often written in Tamil instead.

What ꢘ means

A consonant letter for “cha” — not an emoji.

In this script consonants carry the vowel “a” by default, so ꢘ reads as “ch” plus “a” — an aspirated “ch,” like “church” with extra breath. Inside a word it adds only that sound; alone it reads as a letter sample or a font check.

Why was the Saurashtra script created?

To spell sounds the borrowed scripts could not.

The community descends from weavers who migrated south to Tamil Nadu centuries ago. Its deeper origin is unknown; the earliest Saurashtra-script book commonly cited is the Sourashtranadhi of 1880, and the modernized script dates to the 1880s, earlier forms using conjuncts — joined letters for consonant clusters.

The need was practical: Tamil, the script speakers used most, marks some Saurashtra sounds only with added signs; Devanagari needed extras too. A dedicated alphabet spelled the language directly.

Why is Saurashtra also written in Tamil?

Migration made the community write in several scripts.

The language is Indo-Aryan, related to Gujarati; the script is Brahmic. By the late nineteenth century books appeared in Telugu, Tamil, Devanagari, and Saurashtra — all part of its writing history.

The split is still live: Tamil suits everyday writing, while the native script marks identity. A 1920 community resolution favored Devanagari; a February 2024 update reported native-script classes in Madurai, Tanjore, and Salem.

Technical or identity-marking; odd as a casual reaction.

Not decoration — it is a real letter, not generic “exotic” flavor.

Questions people ask

3

Is ꢘ an emoji?

No — a Saurashtra text letter; it sends like an alphabet letter, not a reaction.

Is ꢘ a Tamil letter?

No. It belongs to the Saurashtra script; the confusion is natural because Saurashtra is most often written in Tamil.

Why does ꢘ show as a box?

The font lacks Saurashtra coverage — the character is right, it just needs a font that draws it.
