What does a separated mosaic tile do?
It is a text-mode tile for building small pictures from character cells.
The numbered pattern fills the upper-right, lower-left, and lower-right quarters; the upper-left stays open. Place mosaic tiles side by side to form a coarse picture; the background gaps keep each filled part distinct.
Unicode, the shared standard for digital text, recorded earlier solid and shaded computer blocks in 1991 for compatibility with existing character sets and terminal emulators; the block set expanded in 1999 and 2002. UK teletext, developed in the early 1970s, used mosaic tiles for simple graphics on broadcast information pages. A 1996 teletext standard describes separated mode, where a background-colour border surrounds each lit block. A 2021 Unicode proposal added explicit separated forms for emulator support and compatibility with software using custom character mappings, and noted their value in text-mode terminal graphics.

1Why does show as a box on some devices?
Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
