Separated Block Sextant 26

621/686

𜹲 is a teletext mosaic tile: one character cell with two columns and three rows, with blocks 2 and 6 lit. Place cells together to build low-resolution pictures; the narrow gaps mark this separated form.

Text symbol

What 𜹲 means

It marks two lit cells in a six-part picture tile. A sextant divides one character cell into two columns and three rows.

Teletext sent pages of text and simple graphics to televisions. British teletext work began in the early 1970s; its 1976 specification described mosaic cells that touched or kept narrow background gaps.

Arrange tiles side by side to build a coarse picture. Unicode encoded separated forms as distinct text characters so teletext emulators (programs that imitate the old system) and files using the private-use area—a reserved range for custom characters—could preserve the format.

Questions people ask

1

Why does 𜹲 show as a box on some devices?

It is recent: Unicode added it in version 16.0 (2024), and phones and computers whose fonts are older than that have nothing to draw it with. The character itself is still correct and copies correctly.
