What food is 🍣 actually showing?

Usually nigiri: a slice of fish on a hand-pressed finger of rice.

Sushi is defined by its rice: cooked rice seasoned with vinegar, usually with salt and often sugar. Topped with raw tuna, cooked shrimp, sweet egg omelette or just vegetables, it is still sushi. Sliced raw fish or seafood served without that rice is sashimi, a different dish. Nigiri is one shape; maki is the same rice rolled with fillings in a sheet of dried seaweed (nori) and cut into rounds.

Sushi began as a way to preserve fish: in parts of East and Southeast Asia, fish was packed with rice under a weight and left to ferment for months, and the rice was often thrown away. In Japan people came to eat the rice too, and vinegar eventually replaced the long fermentation. In Edo, today's Tokyo, hand-pressed nigiri became quick street-stall food in the early 1800s; the emoji's neat pair of pieces descends from that snack.

As of September 2, 2026, WhatsApp and Twitter used maki, a cylindrical sushi roll, in some designs. Other designs showed nigiri, a slice of fish pressed onto rice. The picture doesn't specify the order.
