What ௦ means
It means zero in Tamil place-value numbers. For example, ௧௦ is ten: ௦ leaves the ones place empty. In place-value notation, a digit’s position tells you its value.
You’ll see it in Tamil-script calendars and some traditional Tamil books. Most everyday Tamil text uses 0, so ௦ marks a deliberate choice to keep the number in Tamil script. A Tamil keyboard layout may still enter 0 unless its digit mapping includes Tamil numerals.
How did Tamil numerals change?
The older system gave ten, hundred and thousand their own signs. It did not put digits in fixed place-value columns. A number such as 3,782 could be written as ௩௲௭௱௮௰௨: three thousands, seven hundreds, eight tens, two. Modern Tamil decimal writing instead uses place value and ௦.
A documented teaching milestone came in 1825, when the Tamil arithmetic textbook Kaṇita Tīpikai introduced zero and decimal place value to its readers. That date marks a change in arithmetic teaching, not the first appearance of the exact glyph ௦. In 2004, a proposal submitted to Unicode requested ௦ for digital interchange with other Indic numeral sets.
