Tangut Component-322

322/768

𘥁 is a structural part of the Tangut writing system, not a word with its own translation. It helps index or describe full Tangut characters in reference works and in IDS (Ideographic Description Sequences), a notation for showing how a character is built. Tangut was the language written under the Western Xia, also called Xixia.

Text symbol

What 𘥁 means

It is a component for describing Tangut characters, not a word.

The Tangut script is a historical writing system for the Tangut language. This component label is an inventory name: it helps index, analyze, or describe a whole character, but it is not a translation. Scholars do not all divide Tangut characters into components in exactly the same way, so this glyph alone does not give a character’s pronunciation or meaning.

Western Xia, also called Xixia, used Tangut writing around 1036 to write the Tangut language. Tangut texts continued into the Yuan and Ming periods after Western Xia fell in 1227. A woodblock-printed reference called Homonyms lists components and shows regular and cursive forms; a copy surfaced at a Beijing auction in 2014, without a known provenance. That appearance does not date this component’s first use.

is tangut component 322 a full tangut character

No; it is a component label, not a complete word.

A full Tangut character may be analyzed as built from components, but systems differ in where they divide it. A component can take part in a meaning or sound relationship, or serve only as part of the structure; this sign alone does not tell you which role a complete character gives it.

how do I use tangut component 322 in an IDS

Use it as one element in an IDS description of a full character.

An IDS, or Ideographic Description Sequence, is a layout recipe for showing how a character is arranged; it does not spell Tangut prose. In 𘥁…, this component is first and sits on the left; in 𘥁…, it is first and sits on top. The operator defines the spatial relation, and the next element completes the description.

This is supplementary-plane text, so your editor and font need support for it; otherwise it may appear as a box.

Technical and scholarly; it belongs in a Tangut reference or IDS description, not ordinary prose.

Do not translate it by itself; its role is structural.
