What 𘥘 means
It is a modern index label for studying Tangut characters. The Tangut component set brings together indexing systems from multiple dictionaries and publications rather than one historical component inventory. Its sequential number identifies an entry, not a pronunciation or translation.
Historical Tangut texts use complete characters. This label belongs to the modern system for describing and studying them; by itself, it does not spell a Tangut word.
Why was Tangut writing created?
It served the Western Xia state and Buddhist writing. The Tangut script was created in 1036 by order of Emperor Li Yuanhao. It helped express a distinct political and cultural identity beside the Song dynasty in China. Its forms drew on Chinese visual and compositional principles, and it appeared after neighboring Khitan scripts, but Tangut was its own script.
A manuscript found at Khara-Khoto contains a Tangut translation of secular, or nonreligious, material and probably dates to the 12th or early 13th century. Later source collections are mostly Buddhist, and Tangut texts continued after Western Xia fell in 1227. Those works use complete Tangut characters; component 345 is part of the modern system for studying them.
Why does 𘥘 show as a box?
The selected font or software cannot draw this character. Tangut components are text characters, so their appearance depends on Tangut font coverage. A font that includes these components may display the glyph.
Specialist and documentary: it suits a Tangut character specimen, font test, or research note.
