Tangut Component-358

358/768

𘥥 is a structural piece used to describe larger Tangut characters, not a word to translate on its own. In Xixia-script references, its number labels a component; its role comes from the whole character. A correct insertion can still show as a box if your font lacks Tangut coverage.

What 𘥥 means

𘥥 is a Tangut character component, not a word to translate. These parts help scholars index and analyze larger characters. An Ideographic Description Sequence (IDS) is a notation showing how a character is assembled; 358 is a catalog number, not a pronunciation.

Tangut writing is traditionally dated to 1036, when it was developed for the Western Xia state. It served official records, education, and Buddhist translations. Western Xia fell in 1227, but Tangut writing continued; the last known inscription is dated 1502.

The Sea of Characters, a Tangut dictionary from the 12th century, analyzed characters through their parts. Tangut writing was modeled on Chinese writing, but a Chinese radical—a recurring part used to classify Chinese characters—is not a translation key for a Tangut component. In Tangut lexicography, a source character behind a component may help explain a larger character's sound or meaning; that link varies by character. Unicode's component sets bring together material from dictionaries in Chinese, Japanese, Russian, and English, so read this component through the larger Tangut character or an IDS.

How do I type 𘥥?

Use Unicode-aware input for manual entry. This component is outside the Basic Multilingual Plane, so some four-hex-digit shortcuts cannot reach it. In HTML, 𘥥 is a hexadecimal numeric character reference.

Typing and display are separate: a font without Tangut Components coverage can show a missing-glyph box even when insertion succeeded. A font with Tangut support can resolve the display issue.

For Tangut script study or character indexing, treat it as a structural component; its role comes from the larger character.

Do not assign 𘥥 a word meaning by itself; use the full character or IDS.
