tangut component-474

Tangut Component-474

𘧙 is a component of the Tangut (Xixia) script, used to index and describe full characters; it has no fixed word translation. A component may suggest meaning or sound, depending on the larger character. Today, scholars use the numbered components in dictionaries and in Ideographic Description Sequences (IDS), a notation that shows how Tangut characters are built.

What 𘧙 means

It is a structural part, not a word with one fixed translation.

The Tangut script, also called Xixia, originated in the Western Xia state in what is now northwestern China. Its ruler had it created for the Tangut language around 1036–1037. Its forms drew on Chinese and Khitan writing traditions; Khitan was a neighboring script tradition, but Tangut was distinct. It was used for Buddhist translations, legal texts, and other writing; inscriptions survive as late as 1502.

In the mid-12th century, The Sea of Characters, a Tangut dictionary arranged by rhyme, explained larger characters through shared parts. Unicode's modern component catalog combines several scholarly systems; Component-474 is a sequential label, not a historical name. Scholars use components to index Tangut characters and describe their structure in Ideographic Description Sequences (IDS), a notation that shows how parts are arranged. A component may suggest meaning or sound in one character and play a different role in another.

Why does Tangut show as a box?

A box usually means the font lacks Tangut support.

Unicode identifies the character, but the font draws its visible form. Tangut Yinchuan lists support for Tangut characters and components; version 16.004, listed as fully supported, is dated 2024-12-09. A font without that coverage may show an empty box or another missing-glyph mark.

Scholarly and technical: useful for studying or describing Tangut characters.

The number is a catalog label, not a Tangut word or reading.

Why does 𘧙 show as a box on some devices?

Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
