What 𘨘 means
It is a structural part of Tangut writing, not a complete word.
Scholars use Tangut components to index, analyze, and describe complete characters. Components can also appear in an Ideographic Description Sequence (IDS), a notation that shows how a character is built. Read the whole character for its word and meaning; this component supplies structural information.
Why was Tangut writing created?
It served the state and culture of Western Xia.
Created around 1036 under Western Xia’s first emperor, the Tangut script gave the court a written form of the Tangut language for government and diplomacy. It also marked Tangut identity alongside Chinese writing. Its designers modeled it on Chinese writing; neighboring Khitan and Jurchen court scripts provide regional context, not established ancestry for this component.
Tangut writing continued after 1227 under Yuan and Ming rule. It carried translated Chinese classics, Buddhist scripture, laws, and official documents. A Buddhist printing survives from 1247, and a multilingual stone inscription including Tangut was made in 1345. By the end of the Ming dynasty, the script had become obsolete. In scholarly reference works, components help organize dictionaries and describe character structure.
