Tangut Component-566

566/768

𘨵 is Tangut component 566: a structural piece used to describe and study Tangut characters, not a word with a translation of its own. The Tangut script was created in 1036 for the Western Xia state; this component’s numbered label comes from a modern scholarly inventory. The same script later appeared in Buddhist printing and other texts.

What 𘨵 means

It identifies a piece of a Tangut character’s structure. Scholars use Tangut components to index, compare, and describe larger written characters. An Ideographic Description Sequence (IDS) is a written breakdown showing a character’s parts and how they fit together. 𘨵 identifies a structural element; it does not translate by itself.

The Tangut script was commissioned in 1036 by emperor Li Yuanhao as part of building the Western Xia state. Its purposes included making a Tangut edition of Buddhist scripture and supporting a distinct state identity. A surviving manuscript from Khara-Khoto, probably dated to the 12th or early 13th century, shows the script in later use.

Does 𘨵 mean the same thing in every character?

No single meaning is established for this component. The Sea of Characters, a Tangut rhyming dictionary, analyzed written characters through their shared parts. But scholars’ component inventories differ: Unicode brings together systems from several Tangut dictionaries and other publications. A component can describe how a character is built without carrying one fixed meaning in every character.

Tangut writing continued after the Western Xia state fell. A Tangut Buddhist sutra was printed in 1247; a large Buddhist collection was completed in 1302; and a Buddhist stone inscription used Tangut alongside five other scripts in 1345. The script appeared in religious books as well as public inscriptions.

Why does 𘨵 look like Chinese writing?

Tangut looks similar, but it is a separate script for a different language. Its visual design and some principles for composing characters were influenced by Chinese writing, but Tangut did not derive from Chinese. 𘨵 belongs to Tangut component analysis, not Chinese character writing.

Technical and scholarly: it signals analysis of Tangut writing, not a conversational tone.

Treat 566 as an index label, not an ancient reading or translation.

1

Why does 𘨵 show as a box on some devices?

Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
