Tangut Component 564

564/768

𘨳 is a Tangut writing component: a structural part used to analyze or index full Tangut characters, not a word with its own translation. Tangut components also appear in Ideographic Description Sequences (IDS), which describe how a full character is built. Alone, treat it as notation or a font sample, not a translated message.

Text symbol

What 𘨳 means

It has no fixed meaning by itself; it is one structural part of a full Tangut character. A component may contribute to a larger character’s meaning or sound, but its role depends on that character. In ordinary Tangut text, readers decode complete characters rather than components alone.

The Tangut script was deliberately created in 1036 to write the Tangut language in the Western Xia state. Its ruler, Li Yuanhao, ordered the work; the official Yeli Renrong developed the script. In 1038, a committee began translating Buddhist sutras into Tangut. By the mid-12th century, the Sea of Characters, a Tangut rhyming dictionary, analyzed characters by their component parts. The script outlasted Western Xia; the latest datable Tangut material is from 1502.

Dictionaries use components and stroke counts to index and describe full characters. That is why this Tangut radical works as a lookup key. “564” is a catalogue number, not a translation or a Tangut-era name for the shape; scholars have used different component sets.

What does it mean when someone sends 𘨳?

Usually, it is notation or a font sample, not a readable message. If someone sends 𘨳 by itself, ask for the complete Tangut character or the source passage. The component alone cannot give you its host character’s sound or translation.

For a dictionary lookup, 𘨳 can serve as an index key. To read a historical passage, you need the complete character in context. An Ideographic Description Sequence (IDS) is notation showing how components are arranged to describe a character; simply placing two component glyphs side by side does not make an ordinary Tangut word.

Technical and scholarly; alone in a chat, it reads like notation.

Do not treat it as a translated Tangut word without its full character.

Questions people ask

2

Why does 𘨳 appear blank in a Tangut font?

Font-dependent. As of 2026, BabelStone Tangut Wenhai does not cover every Tangut component, while Tangut Yinchuan covers the Unicode Tangut repertoire. A missing shape can mean the font lacks coverage; it does not mean the text contains another character.

Can Tangut components make a character?

Not by simply placing them in a row. Components appear in notation that describes how a full Tangut character is built; that notation is not itself the regular spelling of a Tangut word.
