Tangut Component-628

628/768

𘩳 is a Tangut component: a structural part scholars use to index and describe complete Tangut characters, not a word with its own translation. The Tangut script served the Western Xia state and works including Buddhist and Confucian texts; this component belongs to dictionary and script research. In a historical text, read the whole character around the part.

What 𘩳 means

It has no standalone Tangut word meaning.

This Tangut component is a structural part used to index and describe complete Tangut characters. Components can help form a character's sound or meaning, but this part alone has no fixed word reading; whether a dictionary calls it a radical depends on that dictionary's indexing system.

An early Tangut code-chart proposal grouped this component with a complete character as an indexing aid. If 𘩳 appears alone, treat it as a technical reference to Tangut writing, not a sentence to translate.

Why did the Tangut script exist?

It served the Western Xia state and its written traditions.

The script was introduced in 1036 under Emperor Li Yuanhao. It supported Tangut state-building and the production of Buddhist texts in Tangut.

Tangut books also carried Chinese works, Buddhist scriptures, Confucian classics, military texts, and literature. A Khara-Khoto manuscript now held by the British Library probably dates to the 12th or early 13th century.

What shaped Tangut writing?

Chinese writing influenced its form; it was not simply copied.

Tangut writing adopted the square visual style and compositional principles of Chinese writing. The Western Xia rulers also followed the neighboring Khitan state's example of creating a state script.

After Western Xia fell in 1227, Tangut texts continued into the Yuan period, especially Buddhist works. Modern dictionaries and script studies treat components such as 𘩳 as cataloguing units, distinct from the complete characters in historical texts.

Technical and archival: it belongs in Tangut dictionaries and script research.

Alone, 𘩳 is a component label, not a translated Tangut word.
