What 𗅓 means
It is Tangut; alone, it has no settled English translation. Specialists propose several historical readings for it, but references give no single English definition. The surrounding Tangut text or a supplied translation is needed to know which word it represents.
Why was the Tangut script made?
Western Xia created it to write its language and run its state. Accounts date the script's introduction to 1036 and credit court official Yeli Renrong with designing it.
Schools taught it, officials used it, and diplomatic texts could be bilingual. Translated, block-printed Buddhist scriptures made the script a major religious medium.
After Western Xia fell in 1227, the script remained in use: Buddhist Tangut pillars erected in 1502 carry inscriptions in it. A Tangut dictionary from the 12th century that groups words with similar readings cites 𗅓.
Is 𗅓 Chinese or Tangut?
It is Tangut, a separate script for the Tangut language. Tangut writing has square forms influenced by Chinese writing, but that does not make this glyph a Chinese character.
Specialist and archival in tone; hard to read without surrounding Tangut text.
Its Chinese-influenced shape does not make it Chinese writing.
