What 𘋊 means
A reconstructed reading tells you its sound, not its translation.
As of 2026, the available Tangut lexicon lists dźjow¹ as a scholarly reconstruction but supplies no English gloss. The left-right analysis, 𘋊 = 𘦑 + 𘥒, records the components used to build the character; it is structural evidence, not a word-for-word translation.
Why was the Tangut script created?
It gave Western Xia a written identity and supported Buddhist translation. Tangut ruler Li Yuanhao ordered the script in 1036. It served state-building and Buddhist translation, and helped distinguish Tangut writing from China of the Song dynasty. Tangut leaders also followed neighboring Khitan people, who had created scripts of their own.
The earliest surviving example cited by modern scholarship is an official dispatch from 1072. Later texts include Buddhist books, Chinese classics, encyclopedias, military treatises and literature; a 1502 inscription shows the script remained in use after Western Xia fell. Tangut writing borrowed Chinese visual and character-building conventions, but it was not derived from Chinese.
How can I type 𘋊?
Use a Unicode picker or a Tangut-specific input method.
Input and display are separate. As of 2026, Noto Serif Tangut provides Tangut font coverage; a system without a Tangut font may show a missing-glyph box, and different fonts can give the character different designs.
Archival and specialist; opaque as a conversational message without Tangut knowledge.
Do not turn its shape into a Chinese translation.
Questions people ask
2Is 𘋊 a Chinese character?
No. It belongs to the Tangut script, which borrowed Chinese visual conventions but was not derived from Chinese. Its shape is not a Chinese translation.
Why does 𘋊 show as a box?
A box is a missing-glyph marker: the display software has no usable Tangut glyph for this character. A font with Tangut coverage can render it.
